I subscribed to stumbleupon a while ago. I almost never go to the recommended links, but since I was enjoying some insomnia last night I took a look through what stumbleupon thought I might like to see:

Stumbleupon sure knows it shit because it lead me to articles on the UK's Gaurdian web site by Mark Boyle. He is completing a year of living cash free:

which lead me to his blog:

I made it through my first day on Medifast. My lean and green meal didnt' turn out as lean or green as I would have liked. I went out to eat and had 2 pieces of bread with "promise" spread; salad; prime rib and butternut squash. I still don't think I did that bad after cutting away all the fat on the prime rib I think there were only 6 oz of lean meat. I only took one bite of the squash and since it was loaded with butter I passed on the rest. I did not eat my last medi-fast snack of the day. So hopefully I didn't ruin my diet already.

Yesterday afternoon I got my drop shipment of a month's worth of "Diabetic Plus" food from Medifast. So, I started the diet this morning with the blue berry oatmeal.

It didn't look like any instant oatmeal I have ever seen before. It looks more like plaster of paris mix with some blue things in it. It cooked up into a rather gelatinous blob which I managed to eat. Tomorrow I will try more water. I have 4 boxes of the stuff so I better get used to it.

The chili that I had for lunch was bland but at least looked like most vegetarian chili that I have had in the past.

In one of my more lucid moments, unfogged by copious amounts of halloween candy, I have decided that I need to pull out all the stops to lose some weight. Over the past few days I have eaten an entire box of Russel Stover chocolates, except for the 2 roman nougat pieces, those are just gross! And a large bargain bag of Halloween candy, except for the nestle crunch bars, they were kind of stale.

Box O Meds

Notice the empty box of chocolates in the trash, next to my giant container of diabetes and other assorted medications!

I left Detroit at 4:45 a.m. and arrived in my driveway at 8:30 p.m. I hit the usual Boston traffic jam at the tolls on the Mass Pike, that extended my trip an extra hour. So the actual drive time was about 15 hours.

Detroit reloaded

Detroit has always been the future in the US. Detroit pulled this country into the age of the automobile. The state that Detroit is in now is where the rest of the country will be if we stay fixed in our auto dependent economy. The other part of this equation is that we have given away all of our manufacturing jobs to the lowest bidder.

Watching the local news is like near future sci fi. Most of the commercial advertisers are for chains of GoodWill thrift stores and ambulance chasing lawyers.

I'm continually amazed by the kindness of the people in Detroit and Ohio. This afternoon I pulled into the Ohio Turnpike Tolls on my way out of Ohio. There was an elderly woman at the toll booth asking the Toll Taker for what looked like directions. My first reaction, I am ashamed to say was irritation. But then I told myself to chill out and relax, which I did. Shortly after another car pulled up in line behind me. I tensed up waiting for the expletives and honking to start. But guess what, no one honked.

I really should not have had soo much coffee yesterday afternoon. I wasn't really able to sleep much. Right now I am having the free breakfast at Best Western. The coffee cups are about the size of a shot glass so it's rather frustrating. The food looks like it has been to a few previous continental breakfasts here at this BW.
